HVAC: The System You Ignore Until It Makes a Sound That Sounds Like a Sound Nothing Should Make

HVAC is complicated in proportion to how much you rely on it. If you live somewhere temperate, you might not need to think about it much. If you live somewhere with actual seasons, you need to think about it seriously.

Sizing matters more than brand. An oversized unit short-cycles, wastes energy, and fails faster. An undersized unit runs constantly and still cannot keep up. Manual J calculations exist for a reason. Use them.

Ductwork is underrated. New equipment installed in aging ductwork will underperform. The duct system delivers the comfort. The equipment makes the comfort. Both need to work.

Zoning is worth considering when different rooms have different uses or different temperature preferences. A zone system lets you treat different areas differently instead of arguing about the thermostat constantly.

Maintenance is boring and necessary. Changing filters regularly is the one thing homeowners can do that makes the biggest difference. Everything else requires a professional who will arrive in a van and diagnose things you cannot.
